One Durham Everybody Eats (OD) is a multicultural center where youth and adults can come together, work with community leaders and teachers in the field of environmental sustainability, learn the essential, honored job-related skills of gardening, food processing, cooking, and serving food, and thereby learn to serve their community, while developing both job skills and a sense of self-worth. This is also a way to address obesity, diabetes and chronic circulatory conditions on the rise in Durham.
Since the growing, preparation and cooking of healthy, fresh food are honored activities in communities, when youth master the skills and habits essential to producing such food, while enhancing their environment, its beauty and sustainability, they are themselves valued, empowered, and transformed, moreover, when people including our youth share food with others that they themselves have produced, this is the creation of community: A restaurant where we eat together at a “family table”.
AND THAT’S NOT ALL! Family fun is key!
